The team behind this resurfacing comparison

The Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital is staffed by four consultants working inside a tertiary general hospital. Ke He, MD, is responsible for the medical review of this site, and she is the physician who performs the skin and laser treatment described here. A decision about depth genuinely involves the others: the Center Director's surgical assessment, which is where a scar or a wrinkle that surface treatment cannot reach is judged; the aesthetic surgeon's view of what surgery would do that resurfacing cannot; and the dermatological assessment that decides whether the skin should be treated at all.

Skin & laser aesthetics · resurfacing depth · pigment risk

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital and head of its skin and laser aesthetic service — and she is the lead physician of this site. A core specialist formerly at the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Department of Xinqiao Hospital, affiliated with Army Medical University, she has worked on the clinical front line in skin laser and injectable aesthetics for more than 20 years, serving over ten thousand patients.

Depth is the decision this site exists to explain, and Dr. He's position is that depth is a clinical finding rather than a preference. Her assessment looks at how deep the pigment sits, whether a wrinkle is present at rest, how the skin behaves after injury, and whether the patient carries the cold sore virus, and the plan follows from those answers. Where the problem is shallow she treats it shallowly rather than offering more, and she treats darker skin conservatively on the grounds that the risk of pigment change belongs to the injury itself rather than to the skill with which it was made. She also sets out the maintenance and sun protection that come after treatment, because a result that is not protected is a result that will not hold.

Clinical focus

  • Assessment of pigment and texture by depth, under good light
  • Chemical peeling by agent class and the depth each reaches
  • Resurfacing by device class, and conservative settings in darker skin
  • Antiviral cover and the management of a cold sore flare
  • Recognition and management of post-inflammatory pigment change

Academic roles & achievements

  • Member, Laser Medicine Group, Chinese Medical Association Plastic Surgery Branch
  • Member, Facial Rejuvenation Group, Chinese Medical Association Plastic Surgery Branch
  • Member, Chongqing Plastic Surgery Quality Control Center
  • Published 5 papers, holds 5 national patents, and introduced 2 new clinical techniques

Depth is not a preference

It is tempting to think of a deeper treatment as a better one. It is not: it is a treatment that reaches further and costs more healing and more risk to do so. The right depth is the shallowest one that reaches the problem, and choosing deeper than that buys risk without buying change.

How deep does your problem actually sit?

An assessment begins by establishing depth rather than by choosing a treatment: how far the pigment sits, whether a wrinkle is present at rest, and how your skin has behaved after injury before. We will say plainly what the shallower plan would and would not achieve, what the healing costs, and what we would advise if neither option were right for your skin.
